Reading payload, GVWR and axle ratings
Payload is what the bike may carry on top of its own road-ready weight. GVWR is the bike plus everything on it. The gap between them is the number that matters when packing.
Three ways makers state the limit
- Payload (BMW)
- BMW lists "Payload (with standard equipment)" next to "Unladen weight, road ready, fully fueled" and "Permitted total weight". On the R 1300 GS page: 237 kg + 228 kg = 465 kg. Unladen is measured to EU rule 168/2013 with all fluids and at least 90% of usable fuel.
- GVWR (Harley-Davidson, Indian)
- Gross Vehicle Weight Rating is the most the loaded bike may weigh. The sheets also list weight in running order. Subtracting one from the other gives the room for people and cargo. A footnote on the 2022 Pan America sheet says one of its measurements reflects a 180 lb operator, a reminder that sheet figures assume a stated rider.
- GAWR
- Gross Axle Weight Rating, per axle. The Street Glide sheet lists 500 lb front and 927 lb rear. A loaded top case sits behind the rear axle, so it bears on the rear rating first.
Parts that count against the limit
Anything not fitted at the factory: side carriers, top racks, crash bars, the cases themselves, and the riders. SW-MOTECH carrier pairs in this catalog weigh 4.6 kg to 5.4 kg before a single case goes on.
The calculator on each bike page subtracts what you enter. The maker's printed rule stays the rule. Tyre pressure and suspension settings for a loaded bike are given in each owner's manual; this site does not give its own.
Conversions used
1 kg = 2.20462 lb. BMW US figures are shown as BMW USA prints them (for the R 1300 GS, 502 lb payload); other BMW pounds are converted and rounded to the nearest pound.
